About Skateboard Wheels
Size
Wheel size is measured in millimetres across the diameter. As a general rule bigger wheels will help you travel faster and offer a smoother ride over rugged surfaces and smaller wheels will give you more control and are preferred for technical skating. The most popular wheel size we sell is 52mm which is a great overall size for skating in the streets or at the skatepark. If you are setting up a cruiser skateboard you should probably be looking more around 55mm.
Shape
Some wheels brands offer a choice of shapes which vary in width and riding surface. The best seller is the classic wheel shape which feature wide rounded sides curving to a narrower riding surface. Some skaters prefer slimmer wheels with flatter or cut out sides which reduces weight and can help lock into grinds. Wider wheels with more riding surface provide a solid, stable ride.
Durometer
This is the scale by which the hardness of wheels is measured with higher numbers signifying harder wheels. Soft wheels offer more grip and comfort and hard wheels are faster and easier to slide. The most common duro for all around performance skateboarding is 99. If you are shopping for an all terrain cruiser skateboard then we would advise a softer wheel around 92 duro.
Brand
The skateboard wheel market is dominated by Spitfire for good reason. They have developed a catalog of great shapes and while expensive their premium Formula Four urethane is considered worth every penny. Spitfire also sponsor one of the biggest, best and most diverse teams in skateboarding. Bones wheels are very good and available a variety of shapes with their Street Tech Formula (STF) proving popular. When it comes to cruiser wheels Ricta Clouds are our favourite.
Don't forget that all wheels need a set of Skateboard Bearings in order to turn.
